Backbenchers welcome KPI move

Backbenchers welcome KPI move

GEORGE TOWN (Oct 16, 2013): Backbenchers here have welcomed the move for a Key Performance Index (KPI) table for the media to evaluate the performance of elected representatives.

State Pakatan Rakyat (PR) backbenchers club chairman Wong Hon Wai said the move initiated by the State Legislative Assembly is a natural extension of what the media corps does.

"It is the duty of the media as the fourth estate to keep tabs and evaluate the performance of the executive, legislature and judiciary as they are the watchdogs," he said when contacted today.

He said it is not extraordinary for the media to conduct such evaluations as they are already doing so via their coverage of the assembly which convenes four times a year.

Wong said the move can create a better check and balance in the assembly compared with evaluations by non-governmental organisations or political parties which may have their own agendas.

The KPI table is expected to be finalised before the last session for the year convenes on Nov 29 when the state's 2014 budget is expected to be announced.

Wong said KPI tables should also be created for the other components in the state legislature including the speaker, executive council members, backbenchers and opposition members.

"I agree with the speaker. Maybe he is getting new ideas from other jurisdictions to conduct such evaluations more thoroughly and in a scientific manner," he said.

On Monday, Penang Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang said a KPI table will be created with input from the media which are also expected to conduct the evaluation.
